Peaceful Protest Against Loggers

Dear Editor,

Re: Fifth Column--by Clayton Ruby--Jun/01/93--The Globe and Mail

Clayton Ruby cleverly used his weekly column to rally a "peaceful" protest this summer against the loggers of Clayoquot Sound. How the organizers will keep crowds of nature-worshipping environmentalists peaceful remains to be seen.

What amazes me is how a certain "well-to-do" of society such as Mr. Ruby can express love and compassion for old trees and pristine nature while ignoring the human consequences of destroying jobs and prosperity, which their environmentalist policies would lead to. The well-to-do got theirs, and are busy trying to deny others the same opportunity. They want huge tracts of land to be extorted to satisfy their vacation fantasies, while families have to uproot and remain uncertain about the next paycheque.

Environmentalists are against all development projects, so a total victory in Clayoquot Sound would have made it that much easier to destroy the next on their long list, ultimately leading to economic ruin. Whether environmentalists are ignorant of economics or just don't care is irrelevant. They want us to give up diversity in food, medicine, knowledge, technology, entertainment and career opportunities so that we can be blessed with something called biodiversity. No thanks!

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
