The "New Canadian Idea"?

Dear Editor,

Re: "Giving Voice to the Canadian Idea"--Editorial--Nov./04/1995--The Globe and Mail

I am encouraged by your editorial attempt to use the Quebec referendum and the racist behaviour by Quebec nationalists to rally Canadians around a new "Canadian Idea," one based on equality for all citizens regardless of race, creed, language, or background. Does this mean a departure from collectivism and a move towards individualism?

The editorial states: "We [Canadians] are for the idea that everyone should have an equal chance to succeed on his or her merit." Really? The very collectivistic Canada Health Act prevents people from benefitting from their own merit and success. It tells people, in effect, that despite their ambition, hard work and success they must accept the same declining quality of health-care that everyone else gets. Does this mean an editorial departure from the envy-driven Canada Health Act? I hope so.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
