Hugh Segal's Recipe for More Decay
by Glenn Woiceshyn

Dear Editor,
Re: "We Must Set Our Sights on the Challenge of Poverty"--by Hugh Segal--Aug/2-4/97--The
Financial Post
Now that the economy is finally recovering from the last orgy of massive government
spending--where individual rights were sacrificed to competing pressure groups lobbying
Ottawa for special favours/handouts--Hugh Segal urges us to begin the next orgy.
It was the creation and expansion of the welfare state that encouraged parasitism,
discouraged productivity, skyrocketed the debt, fueled pressure-group warfare and
helped many get "trapped in poverty"--yet Mr. Segal wants more undefined
"commitments" to welfare statism.
Rather than protect individual rights and thus equality-before-the-law for each individual,
Mr. Segal wants "equality of opportunity," which involves giving government
omnipotent powers to punish some groups while rewarding others--all in the name of
"social progress." The end result has to be political chaos, economic decay
and national unrest.
Mr. Segal believes that he can have his cake and eat it too--that he can have peace
and prosperity while undermining the political principles that make these values
possible.
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
