Government Funding of Lobby
Groups is Morally Obscene

Dear Editor,
Re: "Ottawa Shouldn't Fund Lobby Groups"--Editorial--Feb/4-6/95--The Financial
Post
I applaud your editorial calling for Ottawa to halt funding of lobby groups, but
your evaluation of such funding as "a distasteful process" was a let-down.
Distasteful? How about corrupt, criminal and morally obscene? To steal money from
individuals in order to pay "special-interest" groups to lobby governments
to steal more money from individuals, and so on, cannot be placed in the same category
as wearing green pointed shoes with orange bell-bottom pants to a board meeting.
It is this kind of unwillingness to call a spade a spade that has permitted our governments
to cause so much social unrest and economic decay. When private citizens extort,
blackmail, monopolize or engage in counterfeit, they are properly denounced and reported
to the police. When governments do likewise, and on a much broader scale, they are
heralded as champions of 'Canadian Identity.' At most, the opponents criticize them
as impractical, or such policies as unaffordable, thus conceding morality and justice
to the welfare statists.
Welfare statism would have ceased causing social and economic destruction long ago
if it had not held the moral high ground -- an elevation it never deserved. It is
the cherished morality of altruism that allowed bleeding-heart socialists and liberals
to get away with evading reality and posturing as champions of the very victims their
policies help to create. Evading the fact that reason and freedom for the individual
are the causes of wealth creation, they thwart individual rights in the name of prosperity
for all.
If we truly want to save our country from the ravages of welfare statism, we need
to demonstrate that -- besides being impractical and "distasteful" -- welfare
statism is morally obscene.
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
