Environmentalists Oppose
Fresh Water Sales
Dear Editor,
Re: "Will foreigners drink Canada dry?" -- Editorial -- May 23 -- The Globe
and Mail
Your editorial expressed surprise at the moral outrage, primarily from environmentalists,
that greeted the recent proposals to export what amounts to an insignificant amount
of fresh water -- a renewable resource abundant in Canada. Are your editorial writers
ignorant of the philosophy underlying environmentalism?
Environmentalism is rooted in the notion that pristine nature is sacred. As David
Graber, a research biologist with the U.S. National Park Service, stated it: "We
are not interested in the utility of a particular species or free-flowing river,
or ecosystem to mankind. They have intrinsic value, more value -- to me -- than another
human body, or a billion of them." (LA Times Book Review, Oct. 22, 1989, pg.
10) Exporting fresh water (or any productive, commercial, capitalistic activity)
is evil according to this anti-human religion.
Your editorial stated: "Every barrel of oil and pound of copper pulled from
the ground and sold to foreigners is gone forever, yet these are respectable Canadian
industries." Respectable to whom? Mainstream environmentalists are currently
busy trying to stop these industrial practices. The only issue is how to get Canadians
to agree. Your editorial department needs a wake-up call.
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
