Environmentalism and Leftism
[Published in The Calgary Herald on May 17, 1998]
Dear Editor,
Re: "Clearing the Air on Kyoto" -- letter by Stan Cox -- May 12 -- The
Calgary Herald
Stan Cox accused me of "denial, paranoia and environmental ignorance" for
my article (May 3) in which I debunked the global warming scare and ended by suggesting
that the environmental movement is driven by leftists seeking political power and
the destruction of capitalism. Then how does he explain the massive migration of
leftists into the environmental movement that began decades ago? And why is the green
agenda so consistently socialistic, pushing government control of private property,
natural resources and industrial activities, not to mention the global redistribution
of wealth?
According to Judy Bari of Earth First: "I think if we don't overthrow capitalism,
we don't have a chance of saving the world ecologically. I think it is possible to
have an ecologically sound society under socialism. I don't think it is possible
under capitalism." Another Earth First member, Christopher Manes, outlined a
program for ecological reform in his book "Green Rage" (1990) as follows:
-deindustrialization of the West -reduction of human population -elimination of all
use of fossil fuel.... -end of all monoculture and range cattle production -end of
all commercial logging -restoration of wilderness on developed land -reintroduction
of large predators, such as grizzly bears and wolves.
Many of these "reforms" are currently being pushed by mainstream environmental
movements in Canada. I suggest Mr. Cox do his homework before accusing me of "denial,
paranoia and environmental ignorance"
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
