CBC and Environmentalism
by Glenn Woiceshyn
The following letter was read on Calgary's CBC radio (AM) show
called EYE OPENER on Feb/02/1995.
Dear REACT,
Re: "Special on Environmentalism"-- EYE OPENER--Jan/25/1995
Your special program on environmentalism was very biased. Besides the blatant anti-human
perspective of former Greenpeace activist Paul Watson, the most disturbing part was
the brainwashed young children espousing environmentalist dogma and doomsday predictions.
Such children are too young to evaluate such complex issues objectively, and serve
only as emotion getters.
The human environment of common sense, science, technology, industry and political
freedom has improved human life immensely on this planet. It has allowed people to
live longer and healthier, respond to unforseen disasters and enjoy many things,
including nature, without that old fear of being at the mercy of nature or human
predators.
Environmentalists want us to forget all this. They have substituted emotion for common
sense. They promote the religion of nature-worship as a cover-up for an anti-human
agenda. With the media's help, environmentalists have abused, exploited and politicized
science to spread doomsday myths such as killer pesticides, global cooling, global
warming, etc. They despise technology, attack industry and evade economic realities.
Private property rights could solve many real pollution problems, but environmentalists
want to destroy property rights and individual rights in general by giving government
the ominous power of sacrificing humans to nature. They want governments to have
the power to arbitrarily seize land, halt industrial projects or impose ridiculous
decrees such as zero tolerance for chlorine.
It is dangerous and irresponsible to blindly support a political movement solely
on the stated goals of its members. The road to hell is always paved with good intentions.
One must look with scrutiny at what is evaded and what is to be destroyed to achieve
their so-called good intentions.
If environmentalists want to preserve legitimate human values such as clean air,
clean water, forests and nature parks for humans to enjoy, then they should appeal
to common sense and rational persuasion, not to ignorance and fear. They should stop
undermining other legitimate values and stop evading crucial considerations. They
should stop trying to seize power in order to force their views and values on others.
As for the nature-worshippers who advocate preserving pristine nature at all costs,
they should be regarded in the same manner as any other suicide cult.
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
