The Cause of Global Prosperity is Capitalism

Dear Editor,

Re: "Outlook for Social Progress Bright"--by Thomas d'Aquino--Jan/30/97--The Globe and Mail

Why does Thomas d'Aquino deploy such vague terms as "openness," "transparency," "democratization," and "new economic order" to avoid naming the real cause of global prosperity?

The real cause of global prosperity is capitalism, the social system that protects individual rights and thus leaves individuals free to pursue their lives -- to think, produce, trade -- without government coercion. It's the extent to which the world has embraced capitalism and rejected statism that explains rising global prosperity. Just because today's so-called humanitarians hate the word "capitalism," and everything it stands for, it doesn't mean that alleged pro-capitalists like Mr. d'Aquino should fear using it.

Mr. d'Aquino warns that unless the "new economic order" fails to distribute wealth quickly, a "counter-revolution" will take place. In other words, if those who are currently suffering from statism don't experience instant and miraculous recovery, they'll be up in arms against capitalism. That's like a heavy smoker threatening to smoke more unless he receives free and instant recovery from smoke-related lung disease. The proper response to such threats is unprintable.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
