Another Postal Strike

Dear Editor,

Re: The Current Postal Strike (Nov/25/1997)

If a private corporation were to expand its market share in a given product or service by efficiently keeping costs low and quality high, thereby pleasing a majority of "consumers," it would be subject to government persecution and severe punishment for "monopolistic" practices under Canada's vague and fluid Competition Act. But government maintains a coercive monopoly with Canada Post, which protects inefficiency, inflates costs and allows coercive unions to deprive Canadians of postal service during strikes.

This might sound like complete inconsistency on behalf of the government, but there is a sense in which the government is consistent: both the Competition Act and Canada Post harm "consumers" and violate individual rights.

It's time to privatize Canada Post. (And get rid of the Competition Act too!)

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
