Alan Rock's Gun Control
Bill

Dear Editor,
Re: "Why Not Register Guns?"--letter by George DeCarvalho--May/27-29/95--The
Financial Post
George DeCarvalho supports Allan Rock's gun control bill, C-68, because he thinks
he has the right to "feel safe." Imagine the field day that social engineers,
pressure groups and those experiencing irrational fears would have with that emotional
standard for rights.
Mr. DeCarvalho fears the sheer existence of guns, but doesn't seem to fear the real
and ominous danger of unbridled governments that violate individual rights. Let's
not forget that the greatest crimes against humanity have been committed by omnipotent
governments against their own people -- and always in the name of the "public
good."
It doesn't follow that because "one is required by law to register for a marriage
licence, your car," etc., that one should passively accept the proposed gun
bill. Aside from the fact that two or more wrongs don't make a right, the enforced
registration of cars or marriage is not such a serious threat to liberty whereas
Rock's set-up for universal gun confiscation is. Such a bill obliterates the moral
distinction between responsible and irresponsible gun owners in order to violate
property rights.
Rational people should fear their future safety when someone like Allan Rock proposes
a bill that blatantly fails to solve the problem it is allegedly designed to solve,
yet attacks the individual rights of law-abiding citizens. This is especially true
when it is the same Allan Rock who attempted to junk individual rights and the law
in the Pearson Airport fiasco.
Sincerely,
Glenn Woiceshyn
