A Vicious Assult on Merit

Dear Editor,

Re: "Open Season on White Males? Hardly"--by Kathryn Harrison--Sep/20/96--The Globe and Mail

Professor Kathryn Harrison's methodology for justifying "employment equity" is as follows: 1) count the percentage of blacks, whites, males, etc., in each job category; 2) compare these percentages to the population at large; 3) attribute all differences to racism and bigotry.

Accordingly, she recommends the sacrifice of individual rights on the altar of "equity" by forcing employers to hire people according to race, sex, or other unchosen, nonessential characteristic.

I submit that this is undiluted racism and bigotry, and a vicious assault on merit. But Harrison claims, without an argument, that forcing employers to hire on the basis of race/sex is "merit-based hiring" and the solution to racism and bigotry.
I thought universities are supposed to be institutions of higher learning, not centres of ideological corruption bent on a return to barbarism.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
