Global Warming Polls and Mosquitos

by Glenn Woiceshyn

Dear Editor,

Re: "Environmental Issues Heating Up, Poll Shows"--by Paul Knox--Nov/10/97--The Globe and Mail

According to a recent Environics poll, a majority of people around the world believe more action is needed to prevent global warming and other alleged environmental disasters, and that environmentalism is compatible with economic growth.

Given that 1) global warming lacks scientific proof, 2) environmentalists are ideologically/politically driven and are notorious for scaremongering, and 3) people are generally ignorant about economics--the conclusion to draw is that such polls reflect not truth but the effectiveness of slick propaganda on the ignorant masses. Such polls should not be the basis of political action.

Sincerely,

Dear Editor,

Re: "Mosquito-Borne Diseases Will Rise"--by Trevour Hancock--Nov/04/97--The Globe and Mail

Trevour Hancock warns that mosquito-bourne malaria disease -- which currently kills millions per year -- will rise unless we follow environmentalists' advice and reduce "greenhouse-gas" emissions to allegedly halt global warming.

But as Globe columnist Terence Corcoran reported (June 28, 1997), it was environmentalists who -- despite the many warnings of human tragedy -- exaggerated the dangers of DDT and pressured politicians to block DDT spraying, resulting in a massive upswing in malaria deaths around the world.

Mr. Hancock is attempting to use one horrific disaster cause by scaremongering environmentalists to engage in more scaremongering and thus perpetrate more destruction via a don't-wait-for-proof assault on fossil fuels.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
