Global Warming Farce

by Glenn Woiceshyn

Dear Editor,

Re: "Global Warming and the Ostriches"--by Gordon McBean--Nov/4/97--The Globe and Mail

Anyone who denies that "global warming" is a fact and a threat are branded "ostriches" by Gordon McBean of Environment Canada. But the "facts" he presents, and his admission that they really don't understand the climate, indicate that environmentalists are "Chicken Littles" perpetrating another anti-capitalist, sky-is-falling doomsday myth to scare people into a global eco-dictatorship of some sort.

For example, among other things, he neglected to mention that the 0.3-0.6 degree rise in temperature since 1860 mostly took place before 1940 -- before industrialization and carbon dioxide output took off! Satellite data over the last 20 years of its existence indicate no increase in temperature. As for their "computer models," which can be designed to predict anything, they fail to explain this data.

What environmentalists have been successful at is confusing the public by diverting the debate towards quibbling over "scientific" claims, and away from a deeper root of the problem. The whole debate is driven by political power-lust -- not rational discourse. And it will continue to be driven so as long as governments have the power to violate our individual rights and force us to pay for their so-called science.

Best Premises,

Glenn Woiceshyn
