Feminism and Capitalism

Dear Editor,

Re: Feminism--by Donna Laframboise--Jul/26/97--the Globe and Mail

The feminist movement was tragically hijacked by Marxist ideology. Just as Marxism is used by socialists to inflame animosity towards capitalists, it's used by feminists to inflame animosity towards men. Just as old-style Marxists preach that all capitalists are exploiters, Marxist-feminists preach that all men are rapists. (Feminist Catherine MacKinnon claims that all love-making is rape.)

Ironically, it was capitalism and its moral foundation--individual rights--that paved the way for women's liberation. Capitalism sanctioned each woman's right to her own life and happiness. It freed women from a life of slavish labour in a poverty-stricken shack flooded with unplanned children. Capitalism generated the prosperity and technology that allowed woman to choose mind-stimulating careers and thereby achieve (intellectual and financial) independence--which leads to self-esteem, sexual fulfillment and happiness. Yet modern feminists generally hate capitalism and promote collectivism and statism.

As long as feminism remains rooted in Marxism and collectivism, women should run from it like the plague. I long for the day when we can say: Feminism is dead--long live women's independence.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
