Al Gore's Mawkish Sentimentality

Dear Editor,

Re: "Overwrought Sentimentality Marks the New U.S. Politics"--by Robert Fulford--Sep/18/97--The Globe and Mail]

While I sympathize with Robert Fulford's obvious contempt for the mawkish sentimentality exhibited by politicians such as U.S. Vice-President Al Gore (who told about his sister's lung-cancer death at the recent Democrat convention) in their political speeches, he shouldn't be surprised. Glorifying pain and suffering is at the heart of modern liberalism.
If, as the leftists advocate, those who are ambitious, self-reliant, successful and happy are to be forcibly sacrificed to those who are not, then the latter must be saintly -- and so must pain and suffering. We don't have to worry about not having enough pain and suffering to go around -- the destructive policies of modern liberals will take care of that. Certain politicians thrive on having lots of needy victims to allegedly rescue.

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
