Foreign Aid And Altruism
by Glenn Woiceshyn
Re: "When Less Aid is More"--by John Stackhouse--Oct/18/97--The
Globe and Mail
Dear Editor,
John Stackhouse's informative piece clearly illustrates that leftists have
been disastrously wrong all these years. Government welfare qua foreign aid to third-world
countries (an act of altruism) doesn't help the "have-nots"--it only sacrifices
the freer countries to looters and power lusters. What the "have-nots"
needed was capitalism.
Decades ago, capitalism's greatest champion--Ayn Rand--argued that if the
leftists truly wanted to help the needy (she believed their real motive was power
lust at best, hatred of achievers at worst), they would promote capitalism, not statism,
and rational self-interest, not the forced sacrifice of the "haves" to
the "have-nots".
Stackhouse's piece demonstrates that Ayn Rand (who was denounced by leftists
for her advice) was right. Too bad our mainstream intellectuals still advocate altruism
and government welfare in the name of helping the poor. And too bad they still ignore
Ayn Rand.
Just think of how much better off the Third World would be now if intellectuals
had listened to Ayn Rand and promoted capitalism as the ideal social system.
Best Premises,
