CBC and Socialism
by Glenn Woiceshyn

The following letter was read on Calgary's CBC radio (AM) show called EYE OPENER shortly after Mar/12/1992.

Dear REACT,

Re: "Interview with Audrey McLaughlin" -- EYE OPENER -- Mar/12/1995

I could not believe my ears when I heard Audrey McLaughlin state on the CBC today that a social charter in the constitution would enhance individual rights. Individual rights is a universal principle acknowledging the right of each individual to life, liberty, property and the pursuit happiness. There is nothing to suggest that others are obligated to provide these values.

A right to food, shelter, health care, a decent standard of living, and other economic benefits, means, and can only mean, a right to loot others to pay for such benefits. Regardless of whether a crook does it, or the government does it, or a democratic majority does it, it doesn't hide the fact that it involves theft. By entrenching theft into the constitution as a principle, the government would thereby wipe out the principle of individual rights and thus prepare the road for full-scale special-interest-group warfare, fighting each other over our earnings and savings.

A right which involves violating the rights of others is not a right but a moral corruption. To call them "positive rights" is intellectual corruption, which is always at the root of moral corruption. The socialists have no right to talk about compassion and generosity. These concepts assume that giving is done voluntarily, whereas socialism involves forced extortion. If Canadians are as compassionate and caring as the socialists claim, why do we need charity backed by a gun? Beneath the mask of compassion and care lies a greedy desire for unlimited political power.

A social charter will be a disaster for Canada just as socialism has been a disaster wherever it has been practiced, including to the extent it has been practiced here. It has to be a disaster because it destroys freedom, the freedom of individuals to plan their life long-range and direct their earnings as they see fit.

Our so-called "cherished social safety net" has helped to place Canada in serious debt, and to make Canadians less responsible and competitive. As for our wonderful health-care system, many Canadians are already heading south to avoid the long Soviet-style line-ups that are forming here for special medical services. Universal access to goods and services will eventually lead to universal access to the non-existent. What we need is universality in the protection of individual rights.

Wake up Canada! Socialism is a deadly disease that is already destroying our country. Haven't we learned anything from Eastern Europe?

Sincerely,

Glenn Woiceshyn
